Dynamics of Viscous Jets Viscous jets are of interest in many industrial applications, e.g. drawing, tapering and spinning of glass and polymer fibers. Especially in rotational spinning processes one has to consider curved in-stationary jets. Here, we use the description of the jet as a special one-dimensional Cosserat continuum following the formulation in Antman - a geometrically correct one-dimensional description based on partial differential equations. As for a classical Cosserat rod in elasticity, a jet in the three-dimensional Euclidian space is geometrically characterized by a curve for the position of the jet and by a field of elements of the rotational group SO(3) for the orientation of its cross-sections. In our jet model we make use of the so-called Kirchhoff-constraint, i.e. the cross-sections are assumed to be perpendicular to the tangent of the curve. -

Dynamics of Elastic Rods Elastic rods are considered in many fields of science and technology, for example in different production processes of fibers. For the simulation of their dynamics the correct description of the local and global physical properties and reasonable computation times are the essential requirements. Here, we use the description of the rod as a special one-dimensional Cosserat continuum following the formulation in Antman - a geometrically correct one-dimensional description based on partial differential equations. This type of modeling fulfills the above requirements with respect to simplicity and correctness.
