As an first approximation the shape of the Earth can be described by a sphere. In reality the Earth's shape has deformations. Geoid As an first approximation the shape of the Earth can be described by a sphere. In reality the Earth's shape has deformations. For example the centrifugal forces cause an oblateness at the poles, i.e., as an second approximation the Earth's shape can be modelled as a reference ellipsoid. The reference ellipsoid is an oblate spheroid with two different axes: an equatorial radius (6 378 137 m) and a polar radius (6 356 752.3142 m). In 1828 C.F. Gauß introduced the geoid as a model of the Earth figure.
